Bonterra

bonterra

Healdsburg, CA
1200sf - tastng room
2017
Bonterra is a unique winery in that, while they are distributed widely enough to have product in your local corner store, they are also completely committed to using fully organic grapes. Upon visiting their limited brand vineyard, we found they were also committed to a truly holistic environmental farming process. Not only do they forbid the use of pesticides, they also use natural terraforming to divert waterways that carry ‘good’ insects to plant areas in need of defense from the bad. Coupled with ground crystal soil treatments, and close attention to lunar cycles, it was clear that bonterra wanted to provide a vessel for telling their story as much as feeding people their delicious wines. Taking inspiration form the amalgam approach to vine grafting we designed a system that combined a number of programmatic wood inserts with a lighter upper steel shelving system. Materials from the ranch, such as willow branches, were harvested and used to weave an earthen texture through the superstructure.
